World War One: The Christmas Truce

In the midst of war, in 1914, was a notable event was the first and last of its kind.

Christmas truce of 1914 is a series of extensive informal ceasefires with the Western Front was.

Christmas last week, advertising the British and German soldiers in no man's land of the ad hoc groups with their enemies began to exchange small gifts.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 1914, many soldiers from both sides, no man's land, where they turned in fraternised gifts, food and souvenirs exchanged. Next fraternisation, carol singing and ended up playing football to many meetings.

The cease-fire was distinguished in the midst of death and destruction of peace and humanity seen as symbolic moment. 'Goodwill' despite seemed Front continued fighting in some areas and some areas to reduce the sense of celebration right agreement was more than a body. Sadly the following year, 1915, many units have attempted a similar truce, but it was nothing like the 1914 cease-fire.

1914 cease-fire was not a singular event of its kind. Between humanity inherent in all men, soldiers came out, especially when infantry units were in close proximity to each other. Units unknown aggressive behavior, fraternise will close on occasion to meet exchange goods. Front of the government in some areas where ceasefires be arranged wounded and dead could be collected by both sides. Due to the Christmas truce of 1914 the number of people involved and the level of participation for the festival was important though.

By both parties in the weeks leading to Christmas were several peace efforts. A "Christmas Open Letter" addressed to the German and Austrian women a public message of peace was signed by over 100 British Suffragists being examples. Another example was Pope Benedict XV who in 1914 December 7, an official cease-fire between warring governments on begged for.
Looking particularly at Christmas, there was no official cease-fire, however, more than 100,000 troops along the entire length of the Western Front were involved in informal cessations.

Cease-fire before Christmas Eve, when the German soldiers to decorate the area around their trenches began.

German trenches around their Christmas trees and decorations on the candles and kept floating foil. Germans then proceeded to sing Christmas carols. British soldiers face German trenches the night carols Christmas carols sung by the two sides over each other, started singing. After this, there is no man around the ground where small gifts were exchanged was curious.

In particular, in the front artillery fell silent.

Cease-fire, a breathing space, where the recent fallen soldiers allowed, both wounded and dead were taken back to their respective lines. In terms of people who have died, joint services were held with both German and British Chaplains.

Despite this, the cease-fire was not risk free.

Many soldiers were shot by the opposing force. However, many areas of the cease-fire through the night Christmas in other areas, the left, it continued until the New Year's Day.

A British veteran notes

"I do anything to the unique and strange Christmas Day .... I am a German officer, Lt. any kind I should think a bit of a collector and being seen, I have reported to I will not miss one of your buttons took some imagination .... I brought out my wire clippers and snips with some clever, removed a couple of your buttons and put them in your pocket I In return I gave him two. .... last I saw of my machine gunners, who in civilian life was a bit of an amateur barber was one of a docile Boche cutting the unnaturally long hair, which patience whilst the ground was kneeling on automatic clippers crept up behind her neck "

Celebration ceremony and humanity and goodwill, General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien's spirit despite the British II Corps Command became angry when he heard of truces and that Germans were ordered along the lines of communication are forbidden.

This unique event is a week, the New York Times by an informal press embargo was broken on December 31 was due to was not. British papers soon followed, many first-hand account of the cease-fire printing. Truces by January pictures to the press in England was made. Photographs showed soldiers mingling and singing, and Tom was very positive for magazines.
